Herpes simplex virus requires a moist environment to survive. There is no known animal host; human to human spread is the only known mode of transmission.

There are two herpes simplex viruses:

Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV-1)

Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV-2)

This virus looks the same under a microscope, and the type can infect the mouth or genitals. Most commonly, however, HSV-1 occurs above the waist, and HSV-2 below.

Immune response to Herpes
